Friday

Friday is op shop day in the Valley. With their stores facing each other across the street, the CWA and the Anglican ladies battle it out each Friday to see who has the best cakes in town. The cakes and jams are old school:: sponges, date loaves, scones, and they look totally perfect. But tempting as they, I prefer to head for the home grown produce. Today there was beautiful beurre bosc pears, onions, nugget pumpkins and a new potato I never head of. Umatilla. I get pretty excited about potatoes, but to try a new variety, well that's just Christmas for me! The CWA lady told me not to boil them which makes them perfect for our favourite afternoon school snack at the mo, baked potatoes.
I also scored some more stackables, which I've just started to collect. Plus this sweet cup. I really love the pattern.

All this for less than $10. What more can you say, but TGIF.

Hello?

We have a new phone. It works. I love the sound of the BRRING BRRING. And that you have to wait for the dial to return before dialing the next number. You have to wait. It's refreshing. Simple. Slow. And so very nostalgic.
The children are intrigued, looking in vain for the speaker button, the LCD screen and the speed dial. It has no batteries, no recharging dock and less cables than a modern "cordless." Like I said, simple. It was $2. We like that too.

Yep, we're heading back to the 20th century. Are you? Next up, a turntable I think, or maybe a betamax player.

Easter inspirations

I love the thought of adding a few more elements to how our family celebrates Easter. And the idea of an Easter basket filled with little gifts, in addition to the Easter egg hunt, is such a good one that I think we'll adopt it too. Much more fun (for me) than just a trip to the supermarket to buy chocolate eggs. (Um, I'm not talking about the actual eating of the eggs, just the schlep to shop). 

I've been on the hunt for some vintage egg cups to include. After a trip to the local antique store I came home with this booty - all scored for the sum of $20! I couldn't stop at two, they were all so sweet and really, we can never have enough egg cups in our house. A second score today at the Friday oppy, these two little bunnies were waiting for me to take home for $5 - too cute! I've been scouring ebay for weeks trying to find something similar....

Next week there'll be lots of egg decorating and a few hand stitched good things to make.  And two new pairs of winter pyjamas to find.  As the nights get cooler it's the perfect time for a cosy new pair.  I wish I could whip them up myself, but I need a sewing machine and a few lessons first. A goal for next year certainly, so maybe we can add another element to our family's Easter tradition...

Thrifty Friday

We have two great op shops in our town that are only open on Friday - one run by a church and one is the CWA. Both have fresh produce from local backyards, sweet nanna craft and second hand stuff. Both boast an impressive array of perfectly executed sponges and biscuits, my favourite being peach blossoms, a sort of round pink lamington filled with cream. Today we whizzed through and I found a lovely circa 1978 children's book, and a sweet little hankie, perfectly pressed, but crumpled within half an hour in my possession!
