Love

Three of my favourite photos that Kate Berry took on her visit.  I'm so in love with these photos.  Kate is such a gifted photographer.  I'm so thrilled Kate, you are so clever.  Thank you so much. x

An Easter surprise...

Look what we found in the garden this weekend, a surprise befitting the Easter Season indeed :: a very proud hen with fifteen little chicks.  FIFTEEN! This sweet little black hen has fancied a large brood ever since she started laying, and twice before we've found her sitting on large clutches of eggs in well hidden parts of the garden. But never before have they hatched.   This time she did it, cleverly laying her eggs in an unused compost bin, topped up with a few donated eggs from the other hens it seems.   She looks so very proud of herself, and rightly so. Clever girl, but really, fifteen.

Wishing you and your family a safe and happy Easter xx
Peep! Peep!

In my kitchen

Yesterday was one of those gorgeous days in the kitchen that puts a smile on my face every time I think of it.   Totally perfect.    Meeting in real life a delightful family I've known online for years, cuddling gorgeous baby Poet and talking to an adorable young volcano scientist.  Eating Rayburn toast and jam and apple cake.

I thought I took loads of photos but I didn't. Oh well, luckily there were a few other people taking a snap or two.  Can't wait to see them. They'll be lovely memories of a very sweet day in my kitchen.

Hello!

Look who arrived this morning along with four little siblings!  We are very excited!

Social network peeps

In the four years since we've had chooks, we've never managed to hatch any chicks.  Those hens have just never been broody, at least whilst there's a rooster around.  So when a friend put out the call on Facebook that he had some chicks to give away, we took three. Two black Hamburg/Frizzle crosses and a yellow fluffy something or rather.  They are so cute, the black ones especially with their white fluffy bottoms and the children adore them. Although Spoon is taking an unhealthy interest in them too.  The chicks will live in the kitchen under a heat lamp until they're old enough to go outside. About five weeks apparently. Although on sunny days they enjoy some sunshine on the lawn in a covered, hawk proof enclosure.

That takes the current total thirteen chooks living with us.  Of course, wouldn't you know it, this week two of the big hens have gone broody with both of them sitting on a clutch of fertile eggs.  Hmmm, we may be up for a few more chicks before this spring is through.

Day two :: from the kitchen

Blogtoberfest:: a post a day in October thanks to Tinniegirl.

oh dear

Are the children watching too much Masterchef?

Three!

My little bird, three today. This little man, by my side almost everyday, is so adorable, so demanding, so sweet, so magical, so funny, so kissable. Always with a twinkle in his eye and always hungry. I feel so lucky to have him in my life. Happy birthday my sweet little bird.

One very happy boy.

A long day

Since daylight savings ended we've had 4.30am starts to our days. By 9am I'm shattered. Tempers are short. Hugo's Tantrum Index is Very High to Extreme. We're trying to take it easy but there are still too many things to do. At least we finished decorating the eggs we blew earlier in the week, just in the nick of time.

Despite the tiredness, today there were moments that sparkled. Being outside on such a beautiful autumn day did help soothe little tempers.
Elsa made a cape to become super hero "Word Girl" and blew bubbles on the verandah in the shinning afternoon sun. Hugo, otherwise known as "Word Boy" collected wild mushrooms and made a good muddy mess.

Fingers crossed for long sleeps tonight. At least for mama.

Eye Spy - a new development

A big new development. My little lion cub getting his own big bed and moving out of his baby one. He's so proud and sleeping all through the night at last.  My little lion cub will be three this month, sniff. Lots of new developments to come...
Part of my reluctance to take this leap earlier is because I love this cot. It's a simple vintage piece that has watched over the sweet dreams of many little ones in our extended family. As Hugo was the last in the line, I'm not sure what to do with it now....

Thanks to Cindy for hosting Eye Spy and to A little bird told me for this week's theme.

Little dreams

Goals.  Elsa's been writing a list of hers.  Here they are in her own sweet spelling. Too cute to correct. There's a small box alongside each item to tick off as she achieves each one.
macking
reeding
sensabel
blowing up blouns
riting
swiming
back strok

An admirable list and one that I would happily take on myself.  I'd like to do more making, reading and writing, could certainly do some swimming for exercise.  Must blow up more balloons and be more sensible about money I suppose.

I am so loving to watch this age. It so wonderful to see what she'll do next, that it almost makes up for her growing up so fast.

Did you notice the moon rock on her desk?  Amazing huh!

words and pictures - little things

The little ones who share my home, they play, they giggle, they shout, they grow.
I must remember their little things.
Their little games, their little wonder, their little fun, their little laughter.
I must write down these little things.
Must photograph these little things.
Can't forget these little things.
Their little toys, their little clothes, their little beds, their little chairs.
Please stick around, these little things.
Don't go too soon, these little things.
Their little ears, their little noses.
Their little feet, their little toeses.
Little stories. Little songs.
Little sighs and little tears
Their little hugs.  Their little kisses.
Ooh I love these little things.
Very precious little things.
Please stay forever  little things.

Eye spy - something beautiful in my garden

What a great theme for Cindy's game this week from Beyond Pink and Blue.  There are so many lovely things in the garden right now, but I can't go past my girls. I think chooks really make any garden beautiful.  Remember Jasmine and Mary Jane? Haven't they grown into gorgeous hens?
And speaking of growing up, here are the other babes, who make their second appearance in Eye Spy.  Poulette and Polly.  Ten week old frizzles, aren't they darling?

Oh dear, you will let me know if  I'm turning into a crazy old chook lady won't you?

Magical March - frogs

Look what we found in the pumpkin patch! There were two of these tiny frogs sitting on adjacent leaves. Do you think I could get them to pose together? Not likely. Camera shy amphibians. Very magical.

Elsa's world

Elsa's at that wonderful stage where her imagination can take her amazing places to make wonderful things. Here's a world of flower fairies, made from garden blooms and plasticine. Mothers wearing big ball gowns, looking after flower bud babies, eating tiny bowls of fruit. So lovely to watch. She's so clever. (ahem, if I do say so myself).

How do you nurture and encourage that imagination to ensure that it lasts a lifetime?

Feburary No 5

A new rhythm to our days now that Elsa is back at school.
Slow sunny mornings.
Quieter days. I like it.
Enjoying this book.
I do miss our little kitty cat though...

6th photo, 6th folder

I've been speechless this week so haven't felt like posting. Instead, I've been spending lot's of time with the children with plenty of those hugs where you squeeze so tight that you seem to breathe them in.
I've been tagged by the lovely Jodi to play this game - open the 6th picture folder on your computer, open the 6th photo and blog it. Write something about it. Then tag 6 more people to do the same.

Like many who play this game, I have stumbled across a photo of a forgotten moment. We were living in another house in the same village I mentioned in the last post. Hugo had arrived and I remember the big shift in my relationship with Elsa. I could no longer spend all my time with her, and quite often she played second fiddle to a difficult baby brother who wasn't always well, to the point of a few hospital admissions. Elsa was so good, and so patient and so helpful. I felt quite a bit guilty really. This photo is of a very special moment, because it's just Elsa and me. Hanging out. Having a tea party. In her sweet little bedroom. Look at her adorable little face. It sure does makes me smile...I can use that right now.

Rather than tag six people - why don't you play along too - see where it takes you. And let me know so I can see where you go.

Eye spy a small object....

This week's Eye Spy theme from the Crafty Librarian is a small object - but mine isn't really an object, it's a small thing. Peeps. We're chick sitting for friends and they are rather adorable. They do have small accessories though, tiny water container, small dish full of budgie bird seed to eat. And 1/2 a weetbix and milk for breakfast and dinner. They are so cute. Not sure if we'll be able give them back! Peep Peep!

Now we are six...

...it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I would have rathered the later than the sooner. I had mixed feelings about this little tooth falling out. Delighted by her excitement at losing a tooth, but as she took one big step away from being a small child and a giant leap towards being a big kid, I felt more than a pang of nostalgia for my long gone little one.

But it did provide the opportunity to start a new family tradition, which made me happy. I sewed a little pillow, inspired by Soule Mama, with a tiny pocket for the tooth. I've also been enjoying a book by Susan Perrow, who tells a story of the tooth fairy leaving small gifts like feathers and pebbles for her children. Elsa was filled with wonder and delight at receiving a small diamante jewel from the tooth fairy. There's magic in that, from which I can also take comfort for this inevitable rite of passage.

Holy cow!

An unexpected visitor in the garden today.
