The things I love

Happy New Year to you!

No time for lazing around lately, but I've been doing the things I love.  Working on a big summer project, styling delicious food for a cookbook with some of my favourite people.  In the evenings, we've been scoffing peaches, spitting cherry pips and roasting plums in the oven.  There's been picnics in paddocks and trips to the farm in rattly old Percy.  Tents are pitched in the back yard and the house is full of props.

weekend in pictures

I've been having a play with my new camera lens - this one - which is a huge a proper photographers one, and the photos are amazing.  Here's our weekend in pictures, the first ones using my new lens.

1. My favourite old shed, built right on the water.  I would love to live here.  It's like a giant houseboat.

2. Messy spring garden with lots of flowers, and a naughty chook that escaped from the pen.

3.  It's finally warm enough to cook outside and we gave the campfire a good work out. Here are Elsa's vegetarian "sausages" also known as grilled asparagus.  Sadly the other snags at the back cooked a bit too quickly.

4.  I can't take enough photos of the lovely sage flowers growing by the back door, but this time I managed to capture a bee in flight!

5. A new mobile phone for the children, they made it themselves and to be honest the coverage is pretty good for around here.

6. Happy campers huddled around the barbie at Sunday's River's Table Event - the second in the series that was a bit of a wet and wild day but delicious nonetheless.  More photos here

I hope your weekend was filled with good things too.

Celebrating seven

This week my baby turned seven. Oh my.   We celebrated Hugo style, by pitching a tent in the backyard and inviting a few friends over for a boys own adventure party.

There was a bonfire to cook twist stick bread, hot dogs, a campfire cake and plenty of wrestling in the tent. The boys were given little swagman bundles filled with a torch, first aid kit, magnifying glass along with a little chocolate for nourishment should those adventurers need an energy boost.  Activities included a hike through the bush, a game of soccer and quite a lot of drawing.  Both with pencils and of glow in the dark swords.

I always feel a little wistful when my children celebrate a birthday, as I remember those little babies and see how quickly they are growing up.    But any feelings of sorrow are quickly forgotten when watching the joy and enthusiasm of one not-so-small boy.

Happy birthday Hugo!

Restoration :: part 1

It was a little bit last minute - but the holidays were rapidly drawing to a close and we had to get away.   We filled the car with a tent, blankets, pillows and good things to eat then headed off to catch the next ferry.  Destination :: Bruny Island.

As soon as we boarded the ferry, it felt like a holiday.   We parked at the bow and the ocean spray splashed over the barrier and onto our faces.  The children squealed with delight whilst my cares washed away.  We were on our way for a three day camping trip.

Our camp spot was at Jetty Beach, a good 70 minutes drive south from the ferry.  A gorgeous beach, with calm shallow waters, and walking tracks through the bush.  The peeps spent most of the time at the shore, collecting shells, building sandcastles in the soft white sand or scrambling over the jetty ruins.  Only heading back to camp to fill those empty bellies.  We fried sausages and haloumi and mushrooms then squished them between soft white bread, adding a squirt of homemade tomato sauce.   Then we scorched marshmallows on our little gas cooker and drank hot chocolate.  Then the three of us squeezed into our cosy tent, filled with pillows, quilts and knitted blankets, and lit a lantern and candles to keep it bright. We fell asleep to the sound of the wind whistling through the trees and the birds settling down for the night.

A blissful three days away, on my favourite island, with my peeps was just what the doctor ordered. Before we left, I was feeling tired, cranky, run down and, well, flat.  Walking barefoot along the sandy beaches, I had the overwhelming feeling of restoration.  How precious to have some time and space away from the routine and chores of home.  To find the time to think, to dream, to have fun and to reconnect.

Restoration was what we needed. I'm so glad we found it.

Life is just a bowl of cherries

There's been a lot going on around here lately. I seem to be running from one thing to the next.  Some highs and some lows.  Happy times and sad.   My girl turned ten (!) We celebrated Christmas with good food and good friends.  I felt like I ran a marathon prepping and working for a friend at the Taste Festival.  And MoMa keeps going from strength to strength.

But for the most, it's hard to think about anything much than the devastation that has hit our island.  So many homes lost to intense bush fires.  So much devastation.   Heartbreaking.

The flip side is the incredible show of community spirit as people come together to help those in need.

Humans are amazing.

The camera sits forlornly on the table.  Not used much lately.  But then amidst all the goings one, there was a moment I photographed with Hugo.  After a friend gave us a huge bucket of cherries from his tree.  I took them and I sat with Hugo on the verandah and we ate those cherries.  As the cherries stained his clothes, I taught him an important life skill.  That is, to spit the pips over the railing.

I sat and looked down at what's left of my garden, at the shrivelled leaves on the fruit trees, the wilted berries and the dead brown grass.  All decimated after 40 plus temperatures, crazy hot winds and no rain for weeks.  Not a drop.  I try to feel grateful that I still have a garden.  Plenty don't. I do feel grateful but it is still hard nonetheless.

So I sit with my son, spit pips over the railing and life seems perfect for a moment.  I forget about the bad stuff, breath in the moment, remember the good and finish that bucket of cherries.

Feeling incredibly lucky really.

Love

Three of my favourite photos that Kate Berry took on her visit.  I'm so in love with these photos.  Kate is such a gifted photographer.  I'm so thrilled Kate, you are so clever.  Thank you so much. x

All is calm...

Goodness, there are so many things going on at this time of year, I need to take a moment to stop and notice the quiet, beautiful, times around me.

This week, Hugo graduates from early childhood to early primary.  There will be a ceremony with capes and crowns and rose petals, and no doubt lots of tears from this mama.

Elsa turns TEN.  That, I find hard to believe.

There is Christmas and the associated elving, oh and that market, so exciting.  Then there is garlic to harvest, late summer crops (still) waiting to be planted, a green house to irrigate.  We have lovely guests coming to stay this weekend too.

In among the busy, the tinsel, the rush, I'm trying hard to remember to take a moment, to relish the quiet times, to notice the pretty and most importantly, to squeeze my not-so-little babies a little tighter.

I hope you are finding some calm and bright in your world.

Capital times with 500 humans

An apple a day

Well, I feel it's official now with itineraries in hand and flight details confirmed.  The bags are packed and we're leaving the Apple Isle tomorrow for a capital adventure as part of The Human Brochure campaign.

A super fun weekend in Canberra kicking off with a cocktail party at the War Memorial, other activities include a concert at the botanical gardens, seeing cheetahs at the National Zoo and dinner at the dinosaur museum. Phew! My part of the deal is to share all this fun stuff on twitter, facebook and instagram.

I grew up in Canberra, and I'm looking forward to taking my peeps to some of my favourite childhood haunts like Cockington Green. I wonder if the dog weeing on the leg of a cricket fielder is still there?   I loved that as a kid, and I'm sure my children will too.

Family fun aside, I'm also excited to finally meet one of my blogging friends in IRL! Lexi was  one of the first people to comment on my blog. Ever. And I'm super excited about meeting Tiny too and maybe picking up a few fashion tips.

It goes without saying I'm stoked to be part of such an innovative marketing campaign.  Finally all that time I've wasted invested in social media has started to pay off.

I'll be tweeting from here and there will be pretty pictures here if you want to follow along. Or search #humanbrochure to see what the other 496 humans are up to.

Creative Homebodies

Hello!

I wrote a post over at Justb.  You can read it here.

In my kitchen

Yesterday was one of those gorgeous days in the kitchen that puts a smile on my face every time I think of it.   Totally perfect.    Meeting in real life a delightful family I've known online for years, cuddling gorgeous baby Poet and talking to an adorable young volcano scientist.  Eating Rayburn toast and jam and apple cake.

I thought I took loads of photos but I didn't. Oh well, luckily there were a few other people taking a snap or two.  Can't wait to see them. They'll be lovely memories of a very sweet day in my kitchen.

Happy, Happy Birthday

Today we celebrated Elsa's birthday with a huge stache bash.  A moustache party. With 16 guests it was the biggest children's party I've ever organised.  Hard work but lots of fun (wow those girls eat a lot!).  Elsa is wearing her lovely Miss Haidee dress that we gave her. We set up a photo booth, even Spoon got in on the action, although I"m not sure that he was that amused by the situation.  We played pin the moustache on Bert Reynolds, ate lots of cake and decorated our beautiful Killiecrankie tree.   And we danced to the Ting Tings. Over and over again. I love a good party.  Just wish I wasn't so busy and took more snaps.

Happy Birthday my lovely girl xx
