The dormant perennials I ordered from here arrived in the mail today. Dahlias along with some salvias. I've never grown many flowers before, so I'm a bit unsure. Especially dahlias as you're supposed to dig them up and store them over winter. Sounds a bit scary. But I'm keen to grow some cutting flowers for the house so we'll see how we go. These little pots of dirt with a stick in them will hopefully grow into the stunning Bishop of Llandaff. Couldn't post those out in summer!
They'll be wonderful. Salvias are tough little buggers. I don't bother digging up our dahlias - I'd be there all year! They seem to be fine, so beautiful and showy. They do need dividing once they get going though or they look a bit scraggy. Let me know if you'd like some tubers dug up from my garden and I'll bring them along to the next market.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the last post too - a little bit of scroll inspiration. Yum.
Digger's Club? I've never been game to order the live plants. Just plenty of seeds!
ReplyDeleteI do love Dahlias...mmmm.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea. Happy days :)
Dahlias are one of my all time favourites I'm sure they will look so lovely in the garden and in the house when they flower! Lovely to think about how the will grow into something so pretty.
ReplyDeleteYou will love the Bishop. We have had him in for 5 years now and never once dug him up, he copes with snow, heavy frost, ice and if we're lucky soggy ground. One of the dogs broke the top off one last year early in the season, DH stuck it back in the ground (thought I wouldn't notice), what I did notice was that we had an extra plant that grew and flowered!
ReplyDeleteGood luck, lizzie
What a nice way to get an early start on the growing season. I love dahlias, too.
ReplyDeleteOh I am a Digger too!
ReplyDeleteI love getting the catalogues, making a cuppa and spending hours reading and dreaming.
