The kitchen is almost finished.
There is a photo shoot in this kitchen on Saturday. Early Saturday. I'm excited to meet IRL a dear old blogging friend. But there is lots to do before then. Like a giant jigsaw puzzle, I've got to arrange all this stuff onto new shelves, paint the timber work and wait for the floor tiles to dry before we can finally put the fridge in its new home.
For now, I'll turn my back on the rubble and admire the hallway with it's new coat rack those builders installed for me. I found this old blackwood mantle piece at my favourite local salvage store. Circa 1880 they told me. It's rather large and I love to imagine what grand Georgian mansion it might have been rescued from. A song for $50. The hooks I bought off ebay. Those lovely builders measured the hooks, screwed them in place then installed the whole piece onto the lathe and plaster wall. No easy feat, it's rather heavy. Then I polished it with beeswax. And put some of my favourite things on the shelf. Practical and beautiful. I love it.
Now, time to turn around and face the kitchen.

ReplyDeleteI adore your new rack! What a clever idea and a beautiful way to use the old mantle. Imagine al the people and life that it has seen. We are renovating our kitchen and part of our house later in the year. I'm excited about it but not looking forward to the chaos! Was your wood burning stove already in your home or did you buy it? I'm dreaming of a Rayburn...x

I saw this when you posted it on Instagram - it is so beautiful. I also completely relate to creating a beautiful corner in the midst of chaos. It makes it so much easier to turn around and conquer the hard stuff. Good Luck with the shoot, I hope you can share photos!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous eye you have, to have spotted that lovely piece and transformed it into something so gorgeous and practical. I can't wait to see your kitchen! I shall keep my back on my still un-renovated kitchen for now. (It's salmon in colour.) Though we had the builders here today too, replacing the old sliding glass doors in the lounge and master bedroom, so that we can have screens. Screens! They arrive Monday. Just imagine. A house without a hundred flies in it. Hooray!
ReplyDeleteI'm ignoring the mess the builders left however, hoping to talk my husband into sorting it out tonight. In my post-cesarean state, and having had to run, downhill, in the rain, on the way to taking Emerson to the hospital yesterday, two loads of clothes and the dishes is the limit for me today. :)

What a lovely way to reuse the mantle, and it looks amazing! Sometimes we have to overlook the chaos of renos and look to the end result don't we. I always wonder what I have got myself into when we start yet another project. I can't wait to see your finished kitchen :)
